A Finger Lakes Summer Planning Guide

Summertime in the Finger Lakes is a magical season. Think sunny days, gentle breezes, and TONS of things to see and do! If you're thinking of planning a summer getaway with the girls or need a romantic weekend away, or even want to go on a solo adventure, here are our recommendations for how to enjoy the season:

Explore the Wineries: Seneca Lake is famous for its vineyards and wineries, and summertime is the perfect chance for you to embark on a wine tasting adventure where you can sip and sample all kinds of incredible wine. Take a leisurely drive along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail and you’ll be sure to find something award-winning that fits your preferences and your palate. From boutique wineries to sprawling estates, you'll have plenty of opportunities to sample delicious wines and enjoy breathtaking views of the vineyards. Don’t forget, there is more than just wine here. You’ll find beer, cider and cheese trails too!

Spend Time on the Water: Everything’s just better when you’re on the water. In Seneca Lake, it’s easy to hop aboard a boat tour and get to know the scenery. Many boat tours offer fascinating insights into the history and geology of the region. Want to explore more on your own? You can also rent kayaks or paddle boards to have a much more immersive lake experience where you can explore the bays and coves up close. Crave adventure on the water? You can rent your own boat or jet ski, too!

Explore Watkins Glen State Park: A visit to Watkins Glen State Park is a must during the summer months. It’s gorgeous year-round, but in the summer, think lush vegetation and stunning waterfalls that can give you a little mist on a hot day. Just perfect. Embark on the Gorge Trail and marvel at the 19 waterfalls along the way. The trails are surrounded by towering cliffs and moss-covered rocks. It’s absolutely like being in a fairytale!

Visit Farm Stands and Markets: Summertime in the Finger Lakes means an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce. You’ll surely find maker spaces, farm stands, and farmers' markets in the area to explore. Ithaca Farmers Market is one of our favorites. From juicy berries and sweet corn to fresh tomatoes and artisanal cheeses, you'll find a variety of delicious treats to indulge in while tasting all the flavors of the region.

Attend Festivals and Events: The Finger Lakes region comes alive with vibrant festivals and events during the summer. From music festivals like Music Across the Finger Lakes and art shows to food and wine celebrations like Taste of the Finger Lakes, there's always something happening. Check the local event calendars to see what's on during your visit and immerse yourself in the region's lively cultural scene.

Hike and Bike the Trails: Lace up your hiking boots or hop on a bike and explore the trails! Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike, there are options for all skill levels with plenty of natural sights to see. The trails throughout the FLX offer breathtaking views of lakes, waterfalls, vineyards, and rolling hills, providing an opportunity to connect with nature and really unplug.

Relax and Unwind: Finally, don't forget to take some time to simply relax and unwind. Find a cozy spot along the lakeshore or at one of the lakefront parks and enjoy a picnic or a good book. Watch the sunset paint the sky with vibrant hues on a sunset boat cruise. Go stargazing. Sleep in. The peaceful ambiance of the Finger Lakes will wash away your worries.

Summer is one of the best times to visit the FLX. Not only is the weather great, but there’s so much to see and do!
