Cozy Spots to Read Around Seneca Lake

When you’re planning time at the beach or a weekend away in a cozy cabin, chances are that you’re also thinking about which book to bring with you. Going on vacation is an escape in and of itself but a great story can be the perfect way to enhance your adventure, whether you’re traveling for a special occasion or need a little extra “me” time while you’re away.

When it comes to finding the perfect spot to read while you’re near Seneca Lake, we’re a little biased. There’s nothing better than waking up to a perfect day in one of our vacation rentals, brewing a cup of coffee or tea, and then cracking open a page turner to start your morning. Or, alternatively, slipping under the covers with your latest read in hand, a glass of wine at your bedside to wind down for the night. Our spaces -- whether you choose to stay in one of our micro-cabins, the schoolhouse or farmhouse -- are made for finding peace and tranquility.

But, if you’re looking to get out and explore a bit more while still having a good book to bring along, here are some of our favorite spots to read around Seneca Lake.

At a Coffee Shop, sorta: Watkins Glen, just a short drive from our rental properties, is full of great coffee spots to grab a cuppa but seating is limited at these places! Central Sip has the most seating, but can be hectic with lots of patrons. So you just have to get a little creative. What we love to do is grab a hot bevvie or a chilled lemonade from Babes & Buds Coffee Lounge and Boutique, or Seneca Sunrise Coffee and head down to the Seneca Lake pier. It’s only a few minutes away and you get an awesome view of the lake as you get into your book.

Watkins Glen Public Library: Founded in 1870, this historic building is a staple in Watkins Glen and a quiet stop for browsing the stacks. Stop in and become a member if the FLX are one of your most frequent haunts!

Smith Memorial Park: Just a few minutes away from our vacation rentals in Hector, Smith Memorial Park is a lovely little stop for a walk, gorgeous views, and time under a tree (or two!) with your latest page turner. If you find yourself closer to Watkins Glen, we’d recommend the North or South rim trails of the Watkins Glen State Park for a cozy spot amongst the trees. There’s so many peaceful and quiet places to experience nature and take solace in your time in the Finger Lakes.

Near a Waterfall: There’s something about reading next to moving water that feels like something out of a fairytale. Bring a book with you when you hike and explore any of the waterfalls or state parks in the region. Here are some of our favorites!

Alley Cat Cafe: In nearby Ithaca (just a short drive from Seneca Lake), you’ll find a cat cafe that’s also a popular reading spot! Stop in to visit the kitties, grab a cup of tea (or a pastry!), and find the perfect nook to curl up in for another chapter.

reading outdoors

Seneca Lake Park: With waterfront benches that are perfect for lake views and curling up with a chapter or two, Seneca Lake Park near Geneva is one of our favorite spots for taking a beat when you’re on your Finger Lakes escape! It’s about 45 minutes north of our Seneca Lake Vacation Rentals but gives you a different vantage point of the lake from the north.

Lake Drum Brewing: Located in Geneva, this favorite stop along the Finger Lakes beer trail is a popular one for book lovers who want to pull up a chair at the community table, especially since they also have an in-house library for you to browse through when you stop in for a beer or hard cider!

We’d also suggest bringing along a book to any of the wineries you plan to visit as you explore the Finger Lakes wine trail! At just about every stop, you’ll find plenty of outdoor seating, rocking or Adirondack chairs, and stunning views of vineyards and the surrounding landscape -- all perfect for a little time for rest, relaxation, and literary indulgence (along with a perfect glass of wine!).
