Rainy Day on your Vacay? Our Favorite Museums to Visit in the FLX

A rainy forecast is no reason to compromise on your Finger Lakes escape! We may be biased but we think our region is gorgeous no matter what the weather. However, if you’re on vacation here and need some alternatives to check out if there’s rain in the forecast, we’ve got you covered!

Here are some of our favorite museums to visit if you’re looking to stay warm and dry while you’re out exploring the region: 

1. International Motor Racing Research Center: You know The Glen is the place to catch a race in the FLX, but this research center in Watkins Glen serves all racing enthusiasts with photos and art collections, archives, displays and more. 

2. The Brick Tavern Museum: As the oldest building in Schuyler County, this museum in Watkins Glen is a step back in time with collections that range from Native American artifacts to fiber arts and antique instruments.

3. Corning Museum of Glass: Located about a half hour away from our vacation rentals in the Finger Lakes, this museum celebrates glassware with displays, demonstrations, and a fabulous gift shop. A must see on your FLX visit, rain or shine!

4. Glenn H. Curtiss Museum: In nearby Hammondsport, you’ll find this celebration of pioneer aviator Glenn H. Curtiss, as well as a priceless collection of motorcycles and aircraft. You’ll also find antiques and volunteer restoration experts dedicated to preserving history. 

5. Johnson Museum of Art: Cornell University's Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in Ithaca houses approximately 40,000 works of art and is a perfect place to spend a rainy day. Afterwards, check out local artists showcased in downtown Ithaca’s art galleries.  

6. Museum of the Earth: Located in Ithaca, this natural history museum showcases amazing exhibitions, interactive displays, and art collections that capture our planet’s history from more than 4.5 billion years ago to today. 

7. Sciencenter: Ithaca’s premier science museum for all ages with more than 250 exhibitions, not to mention a seasonal mini golf course -- a great place to feel like a kid again or to bring the whole family! 

8. Greyton H. Taylor Wine Museum: Ever wanted to learn about the history of winemaking in America? This museum in Hammondsport showcases vintage winemaking equipment, rare bottles and artifacts, including presidential wine glasses!

9. Arnot Art Museum: Located in Elmira, this art museum in a historic family mansion offers one of the last remaining private art collections formed in the 19th century still exhibited in its original space. 

10. Chemung Valley History Museum: This Elmira-based treasure is a step back in time and offers visitors exhibitions, education programs, and more to capture the history of the region.
