Unexpected Wines to Try in Finger Lakes Wine Country

When first time visitors to the Finger Lakes come to us for recommendations on where to go and what to see, we also get asked a lot about which wines are best to try in the area. While we always share our favorite wineries (check out our FLX Escape Guidebook!), it’s hard to choose a favorite wine variety as it’s all a matter of taste (and trust us -- it’s hard to go wrong when you’re surrounded by so many amazing wine makers!)

Riesling rightfully holds the spotlight on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail (over 40% of the grapes in the region are of this variety), but the region produces an impressive array of other varietals that deserve your attention. If you're ready to explore beyond the Finger Lakes’ signature white, here are some unexpected wines that might delight your palate:

Cabernet Franc has emerged as a popular dark horse. The cool climate that makes Seneca Lake perfect for Riesling also creates ideal conditions for this elegant red grape. Wagner Vineyards grows more Cabernet Franc than any other winery in the Finger Lakes, producing savory, food-friendly reds with beautiful red fruit and earthy undertones. Ravines Wine Cellars also crafts an award-winning Cabernet Franc that pairs well with grilled steak or smoked cheeses.

Don't overlook the region's sparkling wines, either. Atwater Vineyards offers three distinct styles, from their traditional method Cuvée Brut to fun, lower-alcohol Pétillant Natural (Pét-Nat) wines. These sparklers prove you don't need a special occasion to pop a bottle -- they're perfect for any day.

For something truly unique, seek out Lemberger (also called Blaufränkisch). This Austrian red grape thrives in the Finger Lakes climate. Lakewood Vineyards has perfected this varietal over three generations, producing wines with bold flavors that remain crisp and refreshing.

You’ll also want to try Gewürztraminer, an aromatic white grape that originated in France's Alsace region. Many Seneca Lake wineries craft beautiful expressions of this spicy, floral wine that pairs exceptionally well with Asian cuisine or rich cheeses. Dr. Konstantin Frank or Glenora Wine Cellars have great varieties to try.

Next time you visit the trail, challenge yourself to taste something new. You might just discover your next favorite wine hiding in plain sight among the Rieslings!
